Michela Matteoli is full professor of pharmacology at Humanitas University, the Director of the CNR Institute in Neuroscience and the head of the Neuroscience Research Area of Humanitas Research Hospital, where she also leads the Pharmacology and Brain Pathology Lab.

Michela Matteoli received her PhD from the University of Pisa in 1989. From 1989 to 1991 she has been a postdoctoral fellow at the Yale University School of Medicine and Visiting Scientist at the Virginia School of Medicine. In 1992 she established her laboratory at the CNR-Center of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology, that later became what is known today as the CNR Institute in Neuroscience. In 2002 she became associate professor of Pharmacology at the University of Milano and in 2011 full professor, before moving to Humanitas University. Since 2013 she is head of the Neuroscience Research Area at Humanitas Research Hospital and since 2014 she is Director of the CNR Italian Institute of Neuroscience.

Matteoli has been awarded with EMBO and IBRO-MacArthur fellowships. In 2013 she received the Mid-Career Nature Mentoring Award,in 2015 the Atena prize for scientific achievements, in 2019 the Feltrinelli prize for Biochemistry Physiology and Pharmacology and in 2022 the Marcello Sgarlata prize. She is member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), the Academia Europaea and the Italian “Academia Nazionale dei Lincei” due to her outstanding scientific achievements. She is/has been member in the scientific advisory boards of several international institutions, including the Center for Integrative Research in Biology at the Collège de France, Paris; the Early Career Fellowship Program at Human Technopole, Milano; the Institute of Neuroscience and Psychiatry, Paris;  The Paris School of Neuroscience, the Armenise Harvard Foundation and the Fondazione Veronesi. She has been coordinator or partner in several scientific networks, including NATO, HFSP and European Community programs. She is/has been member in the evaluating panels of several international agencies, including European Research Council Advanced Grants (ERC-AdG) and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).

Matteoli acts as ad hoc reviewer for several international journals including Cell, Science, Nature, Immunity, Neuron, Nature Comm., Mol Psychiatry, Brain, PNAS, EMBO Journal, and others.

Her scientific activity has been funded, among others, by the European Research Council, EraNET-Neuron, Fondazione Telethon, Fondazione Cariplo, AIRC, FISM, the Italian Ministry of Health and the Italian Ministry of Education University and Research.
