Matteo Fossati is junior group leader at Humanitas Research Hospital, where he leads the Cell Biology of the Synapse Lab, and tenured researcher at the CNR Institute of Neuroscience.

After receiving his PhD from the University of Milan in 2013 in cellular and molecular biology, Fossati’s career evolved in the field of neuroscience. As postdoctoral fellow in in Cécile Charrier’s team from 2014 to 2018, at the Institut de Biologie de l’ENS, in Paris, France, his research led to uncover fundamental roles of novel proteins in the regulation of synapse physiology (Fossati et al. 2016 and 2019 Neuron). At the beginning of 2019, he moved back to Milan as tenured researcher at the Institute of Neuroscience of the Italian National Research Council (CNR).

The main goal of his research activity is to understand the molecular processes underlying the functional organization of synapses up to the nanometer scale and how their alteration leads to brain disorders. In particular, he is currently working on the molecular basis of synaptic dysfunction underlying the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders, such as the Angelman syndrome, West syndrome and autism.

Fossati research has been funded, among other, by the Italian Ministry of Health, the Cariplo Foundation and Telethon Foundation.
