Technologist

Gianluca Basso obtained his Master’s degree in Medical Biotechnology at the University of Pavia, Italy and his PhD in Molecular Medicine at the University of Milan, Italy. During this period, he worked at the Laboratory of Molecular Gastroenterology of IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital by focusing on the clinical/molecular characterization and prognostic implications of colorectal synchronous tumors in patients with hereditary colorectal cancer through Microsatellite Instability analysis, Sanger sequencing and immunohistochemistry.

After obtaining his PhD, he moved at the Laboratory of Clinical Investigation of the Department of Medical Genetics of IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital. In these years, he focused his activity on the detection of opportunistic herpes viruses, Hepatitis B and C viruses and the identification of polymorphisms able to influence responses to chemotherapeutic treatments in colorectal cancer patients, by Pyrosequencing platform. He also contributed to set up a new approach, based on Next-Generation-Sequencing using the Illumina platform (Miseq) and Sanger sequencing, to identify germline mutations in patients with hereditary colorectal, pancreatic and breast cancer.

He is currently working at the Genomics Facility located in the Humanitas University Campus by using high throughput techniques of molecular biology, especially Single Cell sequencing and Spatial transcriptomics technologies.
